The aim of this legislation is to standardise adoption procedures in Ireland. The Adoption Act 2010 established the Adoption Authority of Ireland, replacing the Adoption Board, and brought Irish law into harmony with international adoption standards, including the Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Cooperation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption. This Act prioritises the welfare of the child in all adoption proceedings, insists on the consent of both biological parents, and places stringent requirements on intercountry adoptions, ensuring that the child’s best interests are safeguarded throughout the adoption process.
